Couple of mos ago I saw NBA Houston Rockets Center Chinese superstar. Yao Ming petition campaign on protecting sharks. By not buying or eating any form of shark food. Like the sharks fin soup and also dim-sum which a saw served to a lot of local and foreign fast-food even convenience store.
The presence on Thresher Shark in the Philippines turned Malapascua Island in Cebu a major dive tourist attraction. It helps local residents to recover after the devastation from topical typhoon Yolanda or Haiyan last 2013.
See the infomercial video, CS Monitor story and Asian Matters article, why Yao refused to eat this delicacy. It means that when you stop buying they stop killing to. Basic rule of supply and demand. So he uses his popularity for a good cause in saving these endangered species. He said "Endangered Species is our Friend".
My brother and friends used to dive and swim with Butanding or Whale Shark in Oslob, Cebu. And it gain a lot of respect when it comes to tourism in the country. Its fun to watch these sharks and endangered creatures as entertainment. Like what they developed in theme parks and how it feels when you do dive with Sharks in Manila Ocean Park or Do the Slide Dive in Atlantis Palm Dubai.
Before I find sharks as a danger to human kind after seeing those popular Hollywood sharks related movies. But As I traveled around the world, do research I discover more about the goodness of Sharks as it protect the ecosystem. Aside from giving a smile on tourist face.
At the top of predator food chain as biology or basic science explained. Sharks maintain good balance of marine ecosystem. As we kept our oceans healthy we need to balance our marine ecology because there's no local and international law that protects the thresher sharks in the Philippines.
There's not enough sharks in the country because it can still be fished, hunted and traded legally anywhere else. So you can do your part to file a petition of protecting them by signing on this petition like I do. This happens from September 24th to 5th of October 2016 in Johannsberg South Africa.
Where 3 specifies of Thresher Sharks are proposed to be listed on Appendix II of Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) at their Conference of Parties (CoP)
You can make the difference Sign the petition here. And share it in social media like facebook, twitter, linkedin and tumbler. Like I do see sample facebook shared link here.
